SAP HANA Vora – releasing in Sep.2015

SAP Unveils In-Memory Innovation on Hadoop to Accelerate Digital Transformation

Recently(Sep.2015), in a press release SAP announced SAP HANA Vora software, a new in-memory computing innovation for Hadoop. This new offering from SAP intend to help companies simplify how their businesses will run in the digital world – for guiding companies to transform their businesses in today’s digital economy.

SAP Announcement

“In order to succeed in this digital transformation, companies need a platform that enables real-time business, delivers business agility, is able to scale and provides contextual awareness in a hyper-connected world. With the introduction of SAP HANA Vora and the planned new capabilities in SAP HANA Cloud Platform, we aim to enable our customers to become leaders in the digital economy.”

- Quentin Clark, CTO and member of the Global Managing Board of SAP SE.

SAP HANA Vora is an in-memory query engine for Apache Spark and Hadoop – to reveal unprecedented business context by combining enterprise and Hadoop data.

SAP HANA Vora - in-memory query engine runs on the Apache Spark framework, so one can:

• Use the power of in-memory to analyze Big Data stored in Hadoop

• Make more precise decisions through greater contextual awareness

• Democratize data access and help data scientists improve OLAP analysis on Hadoop data

• Simplify Big Data ownership by combining SAP HANA and Hadoop data in one landscape

Capabilities of SAP HANA Vora

What are the Functional Capabilities ?

  • Make more precise decisions

Combine your business data with data from external sources to facilitate faster, more precise decision making – even in constantly changing circumstances.

  • Democratize data access

Access and connect all of your devices, manage their individual lifecycles – and control them remotely. Give data scientists and analysts interactive access to enterprise and Hadoop data – so they can quickly create mashups for online analytical processing (OLAP) analysis.

  • Simplify Big Data ownership

Access and process corporate and Hadoop data from a single solution – to simplify the task of managing Big Data across multiple landscapes.

What are the Technical Capabilities ?

  • In-memory query engine

Run an in-memory query engine on the Apache Spark execution framework. Compile queries to speed up processing across nodes – and accelerate and simplify OLAP analysis.

  • Data hierarchies

Perform OLAP and drilldown analysis with Spark SQL semantics – enhanced to include data hierarchies.

  • Enhanced mashup API

Let users create a projection from enterprise sources to enrich data sets – using an enhanced mashup based on the Spark SQL Data Source API.

  • Enhanced Spark and SAP HANA adaptor

Improve performance with lightning-fast data movement between SAP HANA and Apache Spark.

  • Open development interface

Take advantage of an open source development interface that supports familiar programming languages and all Hadoop distributions.

How to extend the functionality of SAP HANA Vora ?

- SAP HANA Platform: In-memory database and application platform.

- SAP IQ: Logical Big Data warehousing (OLAP).

- SAP SQL Anywhere: For designing embedded database applications for mobile and remote environments.

- SAP Data Services: All types of data integration.

What are the expected Business benefits/impacts or Use Cases ?

SAP HANA Vora is planned to help benefit customers in various industries where highly interactive Big Data analytics in business process context is paramount, such as

  • Financial Services,

  • Telecommunications,

  • Healthcare and

  • Manufacturing.

Use case examples where SAP HANA Vora can potentially benefit customers include:

- Mitigate risk and fraud by detecting new anomalies in financial transactions and customer history data.

- Optimize telecommunication bandwidth by analyzing traffic patterns to help avoid network bottlenecks and improve network quality of service (QoS).

- Deliver preventive maintenance and improve product re-call process by analyzing bill-of-material, services records and sensor data together.
